I'm often reminded of this excerpt:
When Lois Ponte was growing up, her mother, Marian Fleming, often told her the story of the day the angels sang. As a child, it was Lois's favorite story. It still is today.
When Marian Fleming was a young wife, she fell down icy cement steps, seriously injuring herself. Worse than the physical pain, which was intense, was the young woman's despair. She knew that there was a possibility that she wouldn't walk again. She had three little children—how would she possibly cope?
Then one day as she lay alone in her bed, music filled her room—the sweetest singing she'd ever heard. She looked around to see if anyone was there even though she knew that no one was. Still the sweet music continued. The words wound around her, filling her with peace. She'd never heard the song before, but its words were comforting and sung with otherworldly certainty and love.
As the music continued, Marian's despair was turned to trust. She knew that she was hearing angels—singing and encouraging her. That song renewed the courage and determination that she needed to fight her way back to health.
Only after she was walking again did she see and recognize in a hymnal the unfamiliar song she'd heard sung. Excitedly, she traced the words: "God will take care of you, through every day, o'er all the way..." It became her favorite song because she knew for a fact that the lyrics were credible.
Long after she was walking again, Marian kept these things and pondered them in her heart. Every once in a while, she'd tell her story to her enraptured children.
Many years later, as Marian lay dying, in the hospital, her daughter Lois would sit by her bedside and sing "God Will Take Care of You." She hoped that her mother, though in a coma, could hear it and that it would be a loving bridge betweeen this world and the next as the angels took up the final chorus. Lyrics to the classic hymn:
Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
